Chiari Malformation I : Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment

This website is dedicated to the early detection and treatment of Chiari Malformation Type I(CMI) and focuses on cases with herniations of zero to 5mm, usually not accompanied by syrinx.

CMI is a disorder that has traditionally been defined as a downward descent (herniation) of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum, greater than 3mm-5mm.1 There is new medical evidence that discounts tonsillar descent as a means of diagnosing CMI but, rather, defines tonsillar descent as a symptom of CMI. This new evidence suggests an entire new way of diagnosing this condition.

CMI cases with herniations exceeding the minimal (3mm-5mm) are often associated with Syringomyelia (Syrinx), the forced buildup of spinal fluid "pockets" inside the spinal cord caused by trauma or an obstruction of CSF flow (as with CMI).4 (click here for plain English)

    Our Mission:
  • Help individuals who may have CMI.
  • Help doctors learn more about the most recent advances in the diagnosis of CMI.
  • Provide official, respectable documentation of previously diagnosed and treated cases of minimal herniation CMI.
